RUBY IN FOCUS
Ruby is a famed red gemstone, distinguished by its vibrant colour. The word Ruby comes from the Latin rubens (red). Rubies are found in many different shades, from a light red to a rare pigeon blood red. Interestingly, Ruby and Sapphire gemstones share the exact same properties with exception of colour. According to the Gemological Institute of America Rubies can command the highest per-carat price of any coloured stone.
Rubies without imperfections are exceptionally rare. This is one way a Ruby is authenticated – if it has no inclusions, it is likely not a genuine ruby! Rubies have been found all over the world, including in Africa, Australia and the Americas. The finest rubies mined in Myanmar are also known as the “Burmese Rubies”.
Queen Elizabeth famously commissioned the house of Garrard to design a tiara with 96 Rubies she had received from the people of Burma. Queen Elizabeth famously wore this piece to receive President Trump at Buckingham Palace in 2019.
