Sapphire In Focus

Sapphire is one of the most recognised gemstones in the world along with Diamond, Ruby and Emerald. This precious gemstone belongs to the mineral species corundum. Corundum is an exceptionally hard crystal structure, the only gemstone harder than Sapphire is Diamond. The durability of sapphires makes them an excellent choice for engagement rings or everyday wear.

The most valuable colour of Sapphire is a vivid blue. Any other colour is considered a so-called “fancy Sapphire” such as green, yellow, and violet. The finest Sapphires in colour and clarity are yielded in Kashmir, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka.

Sapphires have been treasured for thousands of years, especially prevalent in the Middle Ages and ancient Roman times. Throughout history various cultures have attributed mystical powers to sapphires, including healing, peace, and good health.

They are favoured by European royals including the British, Dutch, and French monarchs. It’s deep blue hue became the signifier for ‘Royal Blue’. Show-stopping Sapphires have been spotted on Diana, Princess of Wales and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge. Fun fact: Sapphires gained in popularity in Great Britain after prince William proposed to Kate with his mother’s Blue Sapphire and Diamond.
